Testimonials from former attendees
A compilation of Dr. Maricella Mendez's many rave reviews as the Director of Training for Collaborative Process Psychology, Inc.
Heidi V. (LCSW), (CEIM)
"I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to train with Dr. Sherwin twice; the first as a rostering CPP clinician, and currently as a CPP Supervisor. Dr. Sherwin is warm and compassionate and also supports stretching opportunities in order to support professional growth. I've learned not just about "doing" CPP and holding the various lenses, but also about "being" with clients and families during a difficult time. Dr. Sherwin leads, teaches, and holds space by example. As a result of training with Dr. Sherwin, I am a more confident and competent CPP clinician and supervisor."

"It has been a true pleasure working with Dr. Maricella Mendez Sherwin. She has been consistently open, supportive, and responsive, not only to me, but to every clinician I’ve sent to her for training. She goes above and beyond to support our work with clients, around the implementation of Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) at our agency. Dr. Mendez Sherwin is one of the most effective trainers I’ve encountered; she creates an inviting, warm atmosphere that encourages open dialogue and thoughtful questions. Her ability to engage and support learners makes a meaningful impact on our clinical practice. And I am fortunate to have her train our clinicians "
Karina Quintero (LCSW)
“Insightful, knowledgeable, and encouraging! Dr. Mendez Sherwin demonstrates her devotion for trauma work in all of her consultations. Assisting her trainees to create new and helpful perspectives regarding clients and their experiences, is amongst her strongest assets. Her trauma-informed trainings are valuable for the work we provide and our communities”
Gloria G. (LMFT), COntinued
"Dr. Maricella Mendez Sherwin has been able to teach me how to provide therapy to the young children who have been impacted by trauma and incorporate the caregiver in treatment with them, in order to guide the dyad in processing and healing from the trauma. Dr. Maricella Mendez Sherwin has helped me grow as a supervisor in teaching and modeling the essential concepts in providing reflective supervision. Each monthly supervisor call provides me with tools that have been helping me grow professionally and clinically so I can support my supervisees."

What was your overall impression of the activity? What went well? What could have been improved?
-
Something I really enjoyed is how Maricella used real life examples to help us understand how/when to use CPP.
-
The breakout groups were helpful to talk through cases using the CPP model
-
The overall training was very educational. The presenter is very informative and knowledgeable on the subject matter. She presents in a way that keeps the audience interested in the content which is important given the length of the training. I particularly enjoyed the breakout activities as it encouraged us to actively participate and apply the material we were learning. Areas of improvement would be a more interactive exercises. Applying this theory can be intimidating even though the presenter did a good job at providing feedback.
-
I thought the information was very helpful, especially in feeling grounded about addressing trauma in the family.
-
I feel that I learned enough to get started as I have some background knowledge with CPP. I have concerns that others without a background in working with this group may feel lost on the application of CPP.
-
The course contributed greatly to my knowledge of interventions which can be implemented with children/families. The role plays supported my confidence in applying learned skills. No identified areas for improvement.
What did you learn that was new or different? How and/or will this information change the way you practice?
-
One thing that was different is how we can use the toys in the play room. I will be more mindful to include more toys that can support understanding the trauma narrative
-
I learned how to create the CPP triangle and use the triangle to introduce treatment to the child. I learned about how to select specific toys to use during treatment and how to reframe a child's behavior based on their trauma history and to help caregivers understand the reasoning behind their behaviors
-
CPP is a very different approach to my work with children and behaviors. ABA or Behavior modification approaches don't typically take trauma into consideration when working to minimize behavioral challenges. I am looking forward to incorporating this trauma informed way or working with patients but also helping the parents reconnect and develop compassion for their children while doing their own trauma work
-
The structure of the narrative helped me in how I would assist families. It is difficult for families to figure out what to say, so the structure is great to use.
-
I learned about formal trauma assessments for parent and child. I learned about addressing the trauma from the start, not shying away from it.
-
The concepts of Angels/Ghosts in the Nursery expanded my knowledge re: impact of generational trauma. In learning CPP tools, I learned how to engage children/caregivers in treatment more sensitively taking into account the parent's trauma.
