What is Child Parent Psychotherapy?
CPP is therapy for young children from birth through age five and their parents/caregivers, which seeks to support families' strengths and relationships, help families heal and grow after stressful experiences, all while respecting the family and cultural values of each family we help.
What happens during CPP?
stage 1
Getting to know a family's needs, challanges, strengths, values, history, and experiences through questionaires & meetings, so we can create a CPP care plan and connect them to the proper resources.
stage 2
We then address the familys needs by meeting once a week with the caregiver where we: play with the child, help the child understand why we are there, and help strengthen the relationsihp between child and parent.
stage 3
We finally plan for the future by seeing what assistance the family will need going forward and celebrate all of the change that the family has made through this CPP process.
Why is it important for caregivers to be involved in treatment?
-
Caregivers/parents know their children best and are essential to development
-
Stressful situations can affect the child-parent relationship
-
Young children rely on their parents/caregivers to feel safe
-
Parents help children understand what they have been through, what they can expect in the future, and teach them to cope with challanging negative emotions
